Seeds of Change: Youth Camp for Sustainable Living and Agronomic Skills

This summer kicked off with an incredible collaboration between the American Preventive Health Organization in Coconut Creek and the Urban Farming Institute (UFI) in Oakland Park, supported by several local partners, including the City of Oakland Park and the City of Boca Raton.

Dr. Sandra El Hajj and marine biologist Stacey Brown led a dynamic week of hands-on training focused on sustainability and environmental well-being. Middle and high school students explored pressing ecosystem issues and were introduced to the vital importance of green urban spaces, water testing, coral reefs, oyster restoration, fire safety, shoreline planting, tree care, and holistic health and nutrition.

They also learned about the concept of induced fire: how controlled burns can actually benefit ecosystems and dove into topics like tree pruning, soil health, the planting process, mulch placement, and sustainable gardening practices.

Students rolled up their sleeves and took part in hands-on activities across the Urban Farming Institute’s Oakland Park space. They refurbished community garden beds, prepared plots for medicinal herb planting, and even took on construction projects leaving their creative touch behind through community art and painting.

Throughout the week, they explored a variety of sustainable systems in action. They learned about solar power systems, coral growing, aquaponics, hydroponics, and permaculture, gaining a deeper understanding of how all these systems interact and contribute to a healthier environment.

And it wasn’t all work! During downtime, students enjoyed sports and games from football and soccer to spikeball and a fun twist on volleyball, helping to build teamwork and friendships along the way.

The week featured valuable insights and contributions from professionals including Liz Dutra, Corky, Steve Vichio, and renowned chef Pat Quinn, who brought their expertise and energy to the group.

A special thank you goes out to our amazing college graduate volunteers from Everglades University in Miami: Marybelle, Berenice, and Jessica, whose support made a lasting impact on the program.

We’re incredibly proud of the outcomes of this collaborative initiative and excited about the momentum it’s created. Stay tuned, more empowering, community-driven programs are on the way!
